Physician Assistant Group Being Pressured
To Condemn Reparative Therapy

May 8, 2007 - The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) is being pressured by gay activists to vote on a resolution condemning reparative therapy.

The AAPA Committee on Diversity (COD) has sent a resolution to the Academy that opposes "the practice of treatments intended to alter sexual orientation."

According to COD Chair Jim Anderson, "We're trying to make sure that we're in line with the views of other mainstream organizations to treat our patients with the very highest care we can. If I give someone in my office who's gay information on not being gay, that's not the very best care because it's unscientific, it's unproven, and it's unsafe."

The COD consulted with the Fellowship of Christian Pas and the Lesbian, Bisexual, and Gay PA Caucus to reach its decision. The COD also consulted with gay activist psychiatrist Jack Drescher who will be presenting a workshop on this subject at the AAPA's annual conference in Phildelphia, May 26-31st.

The resolution states, in part: "Sexual orientation' therapies are inconsistent with the removal of homosexuality as a mental disorder ... Sexual reorientation therapies are based on an understanding of homosexuality that has been rejected by all major health and mental health professions."

Members of the state chapters of AAPA will be asked to vote on this resolution. Without an opposing viewpoint represented at the conference, it is likely that this resolution will pass.

"Any interested individual who disagrees with this effort of the gay lobby should write in to state their opposition. This is yet another effort by gay activists to prevent same-sex attracted people from living in accordance with their values and their deepest sense of self as gendered, heterosexual beings. This motion must not be allowed to pass," said NARTH President Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D.
